Soak it in: Why bath time is integral to your wellbeing

There’s nothing quite like soaking in a luxurious bath on a cold winter’s evening. Calming and good for the soul, here’s how to elevate your bath time routine.

‘Having a bath is more than just a way to clean and cleanse,’ says Zee Hartley, founder of Edinburgh-based natural skincare brand, Koha Beauty. ‘A warm bath can help with blood flow and, by breathing deeper and more slowly, particularly when taking in steam, you’ll inhale more oxygen. Relaxing in a hot bath can also kill bacteria and improve immunity, while relieving the symptoms of colds and flu—making them essential during the colder months.’

Science also supports our love of long, drawn-out soaks. Research shows that being immersed in warm water releases the love hormone, oxytocin, meaning our brain sparks the same feelings as that of physical affection. Blissful, indeed.

Jess Smit, founder of Aberdeen-based Solasta Skin, recommends adding Himalayan Bath Salts to running water for even more wellness benefits. ‘Salts are packed with natural minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, chloride, potassium, and zinc. When you soak in a bath containing a couple of handfuls of pink Himalayan salts, for as little as 20 minutes, your skin will absorb the effects of these potent grains. Think of it as a full-body recharging and detoxing experience.’

One of Scotland’s best-loved interiors Instagrammers, Liz Engelsen, believes the easiest way to add joy to the bathroom is to add a vase of colourful flowers. ‘Flowers are a really simple way to add a bit of unexpected joy to the day—and we all can use a bit of joy these days. It doesn't have to be a luxuriously expensive bouquet, my favourite are tulips which are the perfect pop of colour to make you smile. Definitely way better than an empty loo roll.’

While a full bathroom refurb is currently out of the question, there are some swift updates you can make by way of premium-looking accessories that’ll breathe a new lease of life into your favourite relaxation zone until that time comes. From woven baskets to stash your guest towels in, to bath caddies you can perch a candle and a glass of wine on as you submerge yourself in bubbles, it’s never been easier to bestow your bathroom with a boutique-like feel.
