Five minutes with Dr Nestor Demosthenous

We sat down with one of Edinburgh’s most experienced cosmetic doctors, Dr Nestor Demosthenous, to find out more about his work and his philosophy on aesthetic treatments.

Can you tell us a little bit about your career and how you set up your own clinic?

I started out by obtaining my medical degree from the University of Edinburgh. Initially I was drawn to a surgical career, so after completing my junior doctor years here in Edinburgh, I moved to the west of Scotland for my core surgical training.

Along the way, I fell in love with the idea of aesthetic medicine and the difference this could make to the lives of patients, and so I started practicing this privately. I found it incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling as a career, and it all snowballed from there.

Fast-forward to eight years later, and I’m now back in Edinburgh, with my own large clinic and a wonderful team of doctors offering everything from advanced non-surgical facial rejuvenation, to treatments for women’s intimate health issues.

What’s your philosophy when it comes to cosmetic procedures?

Ageing well. The aim of all of my treatments is all about ageing well. I don’t want to make anyone look younger, but I do want to restore some lost youthful features, thereby softening a face and achieving a well-rested, refined look.

Treatments should be incredibly subtle so that they look as natural as possible; no one should ever be able to tell that you’ve been to see me.

Are you noticing any new cosmetic trends emerging? What do you think will be big in 2019?

I’ve really noticed a shift in the reasons why patients are attending the clinic, and it’s all about natural beauty. Natural is beautiful, we are all imperfectly perfect. So many men and women are now celebrating this, and that’s amazing.

More and more patients are attending the clinic, wanting to simply look the best they can, and not like a celebrity. I think there is definitely a healthy shift in the way that people are seeing themselves and viewing treatments.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

I love that I get to mix medicine and art all day, it’s a very satisfying role and I always enjoy seeing the results, and the patients’ reaction to them.

Also, I love that aesthetic medicine focuses on improving patients’ quality of life. It’s helping them to feel better about themselves, restoring or boosting their self-confidence, thereby improving how they interact with people close to them and the outside world. It’s a privilege to be a part of this positive cycle in people’s lives.

What can we expect to see from Dr Nestor’s Medical & Cosmetic Centre in 2019?

As ever, there are several fantastic projects on the go which will see us grow in the next year. Firstly, our team is expanding. We are currently setting up a new branch to the clinic, focusing on health, wellness and weight management.

Our Skin Health department is bringing in some wonderful new laser device treatments, alongside new team members too. It’s a very exciting time for the clinic and we look forward to seeing what else 2019 holds for us!
