Popping the Question at Edinburgh Castle? Cannonball Has a Sparkling Surprise for You
Looking for the ultimate romantic setting to pop the question? Cannonball, perched on the Royal Mile with breathtaking views of Edinburgh Castle, is making Valentine’s Day even more special this year. Any couple who gets engaged on the Castle Esplanade on February 14th will receive a complimentary bottle of fizz when they dine at the restaurant that evening.
Housed in a stunning 17th-century building, Cannonball is known for its intimate charm, historic grandeur, and some of the most spectacular views in the city. Its menu is a refined take on Scottish classics, featuring the finest seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. For Valentine’s Day, the expert kitchen team has crafted a luxurious five-course tasting menu designed to indulge the senses.
Expect exquisite dishes such as parsnip velouté with sage oil and crispy shallots, red deer loin with juniper and red cabbage, or salt-baked celeriac with black garlic and Jerusalem artichoke. The menu continues with Clava Brie served with quince jelly and oatcakes, before ending on a decadent note with a chocolate cannonball paired with tarocco blood orange and Katy Rodger’s crème fraîche.
The experience is priced at £60 per person, including a Valentine’s cocktail, with the option of paired wines for £40.
A Taste of Edinburgh’s History
The restaurant’s cosy and elegant atmosphere, paired with its stunning views of Edinburgh Castle, also makes it the perfect spot to unwind with a crisp cocktail or a refreshing glass of wine. And for those who love seafood, Cannonball’s Oyster Happy Hours are a must-try, with oysters priced at just £2 each.
Edinburgh has a long history with oysters—back in the 17th century, the city’s famous ‘Oyster Cellars’ saw up to 100,000 oysters eaten each day by candlelight. This was also when the Cannonball Restaurant and Bar townhouse was built, nestled on the doorstep of Edinburgh Castle, the jewel of the Old Town.
Hospitality power couple Carina and Victor Contini have transformed this historic space into a cosy, hidden gem for both locals and visitors. With a unique vantage point, Cannonball offers breathtaking views stretching from the cobbled steps of the Royal Mile to the Firth of Forth in the distance.
The menu is a contemporary take on Scottish cuisine, with oysters sourced from a network of trusted local suppliers. Whether catching up with friends or visiting the city for the first time, the Oyster Happy Hours connect food lovers to Edinburgh’s rich past and thriving culinary present. Available in both the Bar and Restaurant, they make a delightful addition to lunch or dinner, perfectly paired with a fine wine, locally brewed beer, or their signature Edinburgh Castle Kiss cocktail.
