Marrakech: The Perfect Family Holiday
With EasyJet now offering direct flights from both Edinburgh and Glasgow to Marrakech, Scotland’s gateway to the Rose City has never been more accessible. But is Marrakech a family-friendly holiday destination? For us, the answer was a resounding yes.
With our kids now a bit older (11,11,13 and 15), we were ready to step outside our comfort zone and introduce them to a culture entirely different from our own. It felt like a bold move — especially when we arrived late at night, handed our suitcases over to a local’s wooden trolley, and followed him through the winding alleys of the Medina. Mopeds zipped by, and market stalls were shutting up for the night as we navigated the labyrinth guided by our Oliver's Travels concierge.
What began as a leap into the unknown soon became a holiday of dreams — full of unforgettable experiences, welcoming locals, and the magic of Marrakech.
Where to Stay IN MARRAKECH
We wanted somewhere that blended authentic Moroccan charm with modern comforts—a private oasis where we could unwind after exploring the city’s bustling souks and winding medina streets. After some online searching, we found exactly what we were looking for with Riad Medina, through Oliver’s Travels.
Tucked away in the heart of Marrakech’s ancient medina, Riad Medina is a stylish six-bedroom riad that feels like your own secret retreat. From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported into a serene world of intricate mosaic tiles, carved wooden doors, and soft lantern-lit courtyards.
The riad’s layout is perfect for a family gathering. Its spacious bedrooms each have en-suite bathrooms and an effortless mix of traditional Moroccan decor with contemporary touches. The master suite, with its private terrace, became a peaceful hideaway, while the kids loved the colourful twin rooms adorned with artisanal textiles.
One of the highlights was the riad’s rooftop terrace, offering panoramic views of Marrakech’s rooftops and the distant Atlas Mountains. It became our favourite spot for morning coffee and sunset drinks. The central courtyard pool was a lifesaver during the midday heat, giving everyone a refreshing escape.
The housekeeping team and chef services were exceptional, making our stay even more special. We enjoyed traditional Moroccan breakfasts of fluffy msemen, fresh fruit, and mint tea, and even arranged a family dinner of fragrant tagines cooked on-site.
Staying at Riad Medina 1 allowed us to experience Marrakech in comfort and style while feeling fully immersed in the city’s vibrant culture. Its combination of privacy, luxury, and authentic Moroccan hospitality made it the perfect home base for our family adventure.
What to See, Do & Where To Go
Marrakech is a sensory feast, bursting with vibrant experiences, sights, and sounds. To balance the city’s energetic pace, we found it ideal to alternate busy days of sightseeing—whether exploring Marrakech’s historic medina or venturing into the Atlas Mountains—with relaxing downtime by a country club pool or unwinding at a tranquil riad. Here are our top tips for making the most of your Marrakech adventure.
Koutoubia Mosque
Rising gracefully above the heart of Marrakech, the Koutoubia Mosque is the city’s most iconic landmark. Its 77-metre-high minaret, visible from miles around, has stood since the 12th century, symbolizing the spiritual centre of the city. Though non-Muslims can’t enter the mosque, its stunning exterior—adorned with intricate tilework and archways—is a sight to behold. Stroll through the peaceful surrounding gardens, where fragrant orange blossoms and towering palms offer a tranquil escape from the bustling medina. Visit at sunset when the mosque glows in the fading light, creating a truly magical Marrakech moment.
Djemaa El Fna
The buzz of street theatre and halqa performances has filled these lively streets since the 11th century. Once a bustling daily food market for mountain traders, it’s now alive with the hypnotic whine of snake-charmer flutes from mid-morning onward. But the real magic begins at sunset when the air fills with the smoky scent of sizzling grills and musicians strike up their first notes. Visit early in the morning to watch the market slowly come to life—and be sure to return in the evening for an entirely different, electrifying experience.
