Statement wallpaper may have taken a back seat on the interiors scene over the last few years, but it appears to be making a major comeback for 2021…

Much like fashion, interior trends come and go, but almost always circle back around again. It's just how the retail cycle works. But there's one trend that's fallen out of favour for the past few years—wallpaper.

While you'll still likely see subtle paperings here and there, paint has reigned supreme on the interior scene for countless seasons, with many of us choosing to add personality to our rooms by way of painted feature walls, contrast-colour skirtings, and so on. As for wallpaper? It mostly fell out of popularity; that is, until now.

As we find ourselves in the midst of another lockdown, many of us are looking for more ways to make our spaces feel cosy and homely, with wallpaper being the suggestion. We've seen lots of botanical and repetitive prints popping up on our social feeds of late, with those in the know embracing country-esque motifs to tap into the cottagecore movement (see TV presenter Louise Roe's home for inspiration).

And now, as Google confirms that statement wallpaper searches are already up 49% in 2021, we predict it's going to be one of the top defining interior looks of the year.

This news comes almost serendipitously as Lick unveils its latest collaboration with Studio Coverdale, which boasts an array of gorgeous papers that’ll instantly update any room. Some of our other favourite papers come courtesy of Mairi Helena, The Curious Department, and Catherine Rowe Designs, while Jeffreys Interiors tropical installation still lingers in our minds.
