Who doesn’t adore it when the high street starts decorating its windows with all the sparkle of the festive season? Twinkling lights, jewel tones, party clothes, tinsel, baubles, glitz and glamour, all key markers of your classic Christmas window display. But have you ever wondered what happens when the season changes - where do those decorations go?

We’re all looking to be a little more sustainable and eco-friendly in our everyday lives, and this Christmas, Whistles are doing the same, by launching a sustainable window-display campaign in all of its 53 standalone stores, including its Scottish outposts, which can be bought by customers to cut down on waste.

Whistles have partnered with London-based design studio and social enterprise, Goldfinger Factory, to curate the display, which includes a total of 610 sustainable plywood trees. The trees have all been crafted and hand-painted by the Factory’s team of expert makers, trainers and volunteers, which includes disadvantaged young people, who are taken on by the Factory to learn traditional craftsmanship skills.

In a truly circular, sustainable fashion, the Whistles Christmas trees can be purchased by customers throughout November and December from any standalone Whistles store, in exchange for a small donation to Goldfinger Factory. All proceeds will be sent directly to the Factory, to be invested in subsidised craft workshops and apprenticeship programmes for young people who are not in education, employment or training.

Suggested donations span from £10 for one of the small trees, to £30 for one of the larger sizes, and the trees will be on sale from today, 24 November.

So why not try something a little different this festive season, and instead of purchasing a throwaway tree, go for something reusable and sustainable, to serve more than one purpose this festive season? We’ll see you in the queue!
